Abstract
PURPOSE: To improve the measures to purify exhaust gas and the countermeasures against the cost of fuel, by providing a communication passage that communicates a main suction passage with a sub-suction passage at their intermediate points, and arranging throttle valves upstream of said communication passage and in the suction passages, and a throttle valve down stream of said communication passage and in the sub-suction passage.
CONSTITUTION: The sub-suction passage 10 has a cross-sectional area less than that of the main suction passage 9, and both the passages are controlled by a suction valve 17 to become in and out of communication with a combustion chamber 8. The communication passage 26 is arranged for communicating both the suction passages 9, 10 and the throttle valves 23W25 are provided upstream and downstream of the communication passage 26. When the engine is driven under low load, the throttle valve 23 is actuated to supply major part of the suction gas via the sub-suction passage 10 into the combustion chamber. As the flow rate increase, the throttle valve 25 is actuated followed by the action of the throttle valve 24. Consequently, the shift from the driving under low load to the driving under high load can be effected smoothly, and purifying of the exhaust gas and lowering of the cost for fuel can be enhanced.
