Abstract

PURPOSE:To control the width of a steel strip to a target value with high accuracy by measuring the width of the steel strip at the inlet of a continuous heating furnace, comparing the same with the target width value, and controlling the tension of the steel strip in the furnace in accordance with the difference thereof in heat-treating the steel strip in said furnace. CONSTITUTION:In heat-treating a steel strip 2 by passing the same through a heating furnace 1 such as continuous annealing furnace, the width of the strip 2 is measured with a steel strip width gage 7 at the inlet of the heating furnace, and its measured value B is inputted to a comparator 8, by which it is compared with a target width value B0. The compared differential value DELTAb thereof is taken out as an output signal and is put into a tension controller 9' by which the tension of a dancer roll 4 corresponding to DELTAb is operated. In accordance with the operated value thereof, a driving device moving the roll 4 vertically is operated to control the tension of the strip 2, whereby the width of the strip 2 is controlled. Or, further, the draft of the leveler in the heating furnace is controlled by the DELTAb signal, whereby the width control is much more improved.
