Abstract

PURPOSE:To deposit a strong and homogenous copper coating film on the surface of stainless steel by contacting stainless steel with a copper depositing liquid which contains copper ion in a predetermined concn. and of which a pH range is specified at a room temp. CONSTITUTION:A copper salt (e.g.; copper acetate + copper chloride) is added to an aqueous solution of acetic acid or the like to prepare a copper depositing liquid of which copper ion concn. is adjusted to about 0.1-1.0mol/l, especially, about 0.4-0.6mol/l and a pH to about 2.8-3.8, especially, about 3.0-3.3. Next, stainless steel (13% Cr steel, 18% Cr steel or the like) is contacted with said copper precipitation liquid for 5-120sec at a room temp. to deposit a copper coating film with a thickness of 0.2-4mu on the surface of stainless steel. Subsequently, a blackening liquid containing an Se(IV) compound (e.g.; selenious acid) is contacted with the copper coating film to form an extremely strong black coating film on the surface of the stainless steel. This method can be availably utilized in a graduating method of a length measuring scale made of a metal.
