Abstract

PURPOSE: After a metalworking oil is made strongly acidic, a testing paper containing a chemical sensing hydrogen sulfide, such as lead acetate or iron formate, is exposed to the gas phase of the oil, whereby the number of sulfate reducing bacteria is calculated by the degree of discoloration of the testing paper.
CONSTITUTION: An acid selected from hydrochloric, sulfuric and nitric acids is added to a metalworking oil to make the pH less than 2. A testing paper coated with a chemical sensing hydrogen sulfide such as lead acetate, iron acetate, copper acetate, nickel formate or tin formate is exposed to the gas phase of the acid-treated oil and the degree of the discoloration is observed. Previously, the number of sulfur reducing bacteria in samples is measured by the agar cultivation method and the relation thereof with the degree of the discoloration of the testing paper is put together in a table to use for approximate calculation.
