Abstract

PURPOSE: To quantitatively analyzing acid and total iron ions with a high accuracy easily and efficiently, by reducing ferric ions into ferrous ions by adding a reducing agent to a sample acid and ferric ions and thereafter titrating the ferrous ions with an alkali titrating solution.
CONSTITUTION: To a sample containing acid and ferric ions there is added a solution of a reducing agent such as K2S2O3, Na2S2O3, KI, or NaI to reduce ferric ions into ferrous ions. Then, the region of sudden change of pH is measured by the potentiometric titration using the alkali titrating solution. The quantity of acid is estimated from the quantity of the alkali titrating solution required for reaching the first pH sudden change region and the quantity of total ions can be estimated from the additional quantity added of the alkali titrating solution required for reaching the succeeding pH sudden change region.
