Abstract

PURPOSE: To manufacture electrolytic chromic acid-treated steel sheet for cans used for making canned foods etc., excellent in adhesion property to coating medium, by performing electrolytic treatment in two separate runs in the manufacture of electrolytic chromic acid-treated steel sheet having two layers i.e. a metallic Cr layer and a hydrated chromic oxide layer on the matallic Cr layer.
CONSTITUTION: In the manufacture of electrolytic chromic acid-treated steel sheet, having two layer coatings of metallic Cr and hydrated chromic oxide, for cans used for making canned products such as general foods, coffee etc., metallic Cr layer is formed by the cathodic electrolysis in a soln. consisting of 20W200g/l CrO3 in terms of Cr, 1.5W4.0g/l fluorine in the form of alkali metal salt, ammonium slat, hydrofluoric acid. The soln. is adjusted to ≤0.2g/l sulfuric acid radical of an impurity, and to F/S≥20. The steel sheet is subjected to cathodic electrolysis before or after said treatment with a soln. contg. 10W40g/l chromate, dichromate of alkali metal in terms of Cr concn., and contg. no F and sulfuric acid group thereby forming hydrated chromic oxide layer 10W30mg/m2 in thickness on the metallic Cr layer.
