Abstract

PURPOSE: Hollow fibers of cellulose ester containing a plasticizer inside the membrane is directly hydrolyzed to produce titled hollow fibers suitably used for hemodialyzer because of their high water elimination, high permeability of waste products and less blood volume.
CONSTITUTION: A cellulose ester such as cellulose acetate is uniformly dissolved in a solvent such as formamide or acetone to prepare the spinning dope. The dope is extruded from annular nozzles and at the same time, a core liquid such as d- limonene is introduced into the hollow part and the extruded fibers are treated by a dry-wet spinning method to produce hollow fibers. The resultant fibers are treated with an aqueous solution containing 5W70% of plasticizer for cellulose ester such as glycerol and hydrolyzed in an aqueous alkali containing more than 5% of salt such as sodium carbonate at 0W100°C to produce the objective hollow fibers.
