Abstract

PURPOSE: To manufacture a steel for steel cord by softening hard inclusions by a procedure in which a CaO-containing flux with an inert gas is blown into molten steel in a ladle for preliminary decarburization and then the molten steel is cast into a casting mold in which an alloy containing one or more of Ca, Mg, and REM is hanged down.
CONSTITUTION: A molten steel with a very small amount of Al2O3-based inclusions is put in a ladle without using Al or Al alloy as deoxidizer, and then a CaO- based flux with an inert gas, e.g., Ar, N2, etc., as a carrier gas is blown into the molten steel, whereupon the molten steel is deoxidized by CaO and its O2 content is lowered to 20W30ppm. Then, the molten steel is cast into a casting mold in which an alloy containng one or two or more of Ca, Mg, and REM is hanged down, where decarburization is further performed by means of Ca, Mg, or REM and a soft inclusion of a low-melting multi-component system consisting of MnO, SiO2, Al2O3, CaO, MgO, etc. is formed. Thus, a wire for steel cord, having a nonductile inclusion index of 20 or les, can be manufactured.
