Abstract

PURPOSE: To carry out the hydrogenation heavy hydrocarbons without deterioration of catalytic activity, by the use of a composite catalyst composed of three components comprising a clay mineral having a double-chain structure and composed mainly of magnesium silicate, a specific oxide, and a specific metal or its compound.
CONSTITUTION: A catalyst having a pore volume of 0.5W2.0cm3/g, the surface area of pores having a diameter of ≥75Å of 40W400m2/g, and the average pore diameter of 100W500Å, is prepared by combining the following three components: (A) a clay mineral composed mainly of magnesium silicate and having double-chain structure, (B) 5W80wt% of at least one compound of an element selected from the groups of IIA, IIIA, IVA and IVB, and capable of forming an oxyacid, and (C) 0.1W 20wt% (reduced to metal) of at least one metal selected from the VB, VIB, VIII, and IB groups, or its compound. Heavy hydrocarbons are hydrogenated in the presence of the catalyst, at a hydrogen/oil ratio of 100W2,000Nl/l, at 350W400°C, under a pressure of 30W250kg/cm2.G, and at a liquid space velocity of 0.1W10Hr-1.
