Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a catalyst for hydrogenolysis capable of providing intermediate fractions in high yields and having a long life, by a method wherein pore characteristics of alumina-boria used as a carrier for the hydrogenolysis catalyst are controlled in a specified manner.
CONSTITUTION: In the hydrogenolysis for obtaining intermediate fractions such as kerosene, gas oil, etc. heavy oil or the like, the catalyst includes metal(s) of Group VIA and Group VIII of the periodic table supported on a carrier consisting of alumina- boria which exhibits properties of a solid acid. The pores of the carrier are so controlled that, when measured by nitrogen gas method, the pores having diameters in the range of 0W600Å have an average diameter of 70W100Å, the volume of the pores having diameters of 70W100Å is 70% of the volume of the pores having diameters of 0W600Å, and the volume of the pores having diameters of 0W60Å is not more than 20%. In addition, when the pores are measured by mercury porovisimetry, the pores having diameters in the range of 62W600Å have an average diameter of 70W100Å, the volume of the pores having diameters in the range of (the average diameter -10Å)W(the average diameter +10Å) is at least 60% of the total volume of the pores having diameters of 62W600Å, and the remainder accounts for more than 15%.
