Abstract

PURPOSE: A cholagogue comprising geniposidic acid aglycone from a vegetable component as an active ingredient.
CONSTITUTION: A cholagogue comprising geniposidic acid aglycone shown by the formula as an active ingredient. The compound shown by the formula is obtained by extracting the seed of Plantago asiatica L, a plant of plantaginaceae or the fruit of Gardenia jusminoides Ellis, a plant of Rubiaceae to give a crude glycoside, followed by purification to give geniposidic acid. The glycoside is hydrolyzed by β- glucosidase to give white solid geniposidic acid aglycone. The intravenous and duodenal administration of a rat increases the flow rate of bile and shows cholagogic actions. Its acuate toxicity is low.
