Abstract

PURPOSE: A cholagogue containing patrinosides obtained from the plants of Valerianaceae genus, as effective component.
CONSTITUTION: A composition containing a compound of formula (R is H or glucose), i.e. patrinoside (R is glucose) or a novel compound (R is H), as an effective component. The composition exhibits remarkable cholagogic activity in a short time to a rat by intravenous injection, and long-acting cholagogic effect by duodenal infusion. "Ominaeshi" (Patrinia scabiosaefolia Fischer) and "Otokoeshi" (Patrinia villosa Juss.), plants of Valerianaceae genus, are known as "Haisho" in Chinese medicine, and expected to be useful as antiphlogistic agent, draining agent, antidote, etc. The patrinoside described above can be obtained by extracting the plant. Decomposition of patrinoside with β-glucosidase affords a novel compound of formula wherein R is H.
