Abstract

PURPOSE:To enable to transmit information with middle gradations like a photograph by regarding picture elements of a video signal as a unit cycle and by setting a reference level which varies regularly within the unit cycle. CONSTITUTION:Information pattern P to be read is formed of white part P1, middle gradation parts P2-P4, black part P5. On the basis of pattern P like this, video signals 5-9 are read out in time series. For those signals 5-9, unit cycles T1-T5 are set. In those cycles T1-T5, the part from the black level to the white level is considered to be 100% and reference level saw-tooth signals 10-14 rising linearly 10%-90%, for example, are generated by reference level signal generator 4 and inputted to comparator 1. Then, comparator 1 makes comparisons at points in time corresponding to centers of video signals 5-9, picture element signals, inputted from terminal 2. Thus, a reproduced picture having five gradations, for example, correspondig to pattern P to be read can be obtained.
