Abstract

PURPOSE: To synthesize high-purity sulfur tetrafluoride in high yield, by reacting sulfur dichloride with a compound of the formul a Py(HF) in the presence of a mixed solvent of methylene chloride with trichlorotrifluoroethane.
CONSTITUTION: 1mol of sulfur dichloride is reacted with 1W10 mols, calculated as pyridine (Py), compound of the formula Py(HF)1-4 (Py is pyridine) in the presence of a mixed solvent consisting of 20W80mol% methylene chloride with 80W 20mol% trichlorotrifluoroethane at normal pressure to 5atm and 10W60°C to synthesize sulfur tetrafluoride. The use of the mixed solvent permits the separation of the solvent containing S2Cl2 formed as a by-product in the formation of the sulfur tetrafluoride in the under layer and Py(HCl) in the upper layer, which can be converted into the Py(HF) readily on reaction with hydrofluoric acid. Thus, the pyridine can be utilized effectively.
