Abstract

PURPOSE: To inexpensively obtain high-purity SF5Cl useful as a starting material for manufacturing SF6 as an insulating material for high voltage in a high yield by reacting an amine compound of hydrofluoric acid with sulfur chloride and excess chlorine.
CONSTITUTION: The desired SF5Cl is obtd. by reacting 1mol sulfur chloride with about 1W15mol amine compound of hydrofluoric acid represented by general formula A(HF)n (where A is an amine such as pyridine, quinoline, picoline or trimethylamine, and n is 1W6) and about 2W10mol chlorine at about 0W60°C under about 1W10kg/cm2G pressure. The reaction can be performed more smoothly in the presence of a solvent such as halogenated hydrocarbons including methylene chloride, chloroform, CCl4 and fluorotrichloromethane. By thermally decomposing the resulting SF5Cl, SF6 useful as an insulating material for high voltage can be manufactured.
