Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare high-purity SF6 at low cost, by reacting sulfur or sulfur chloride with chlorine and a pyridine compound of hydrofluoric acid to give SF5Cl, followed by pyrolyzing it.
CONSTITUTION: 1mol of sulfuric acid or sulfur chloride calculated as sulfur is reacted with 1W15mol pyridine compound of hydrofluoric acid and 1W10mol chlorine in the presence or absence of a solvent of a halogenated hydrocarbon, e.g., methylene chloride, chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, fluorotrichloromethane, trichlorotrifluoroethane, etc. at 0W60°C, to give SF5Cl. This SF5Cl is phyrolyzed using copper or mercury as a catalyst ar 200W300°C, to prepare SF6.
