Abstract
PURPOSE: To easily manufacture high purity sulfur hexafluoride by reacting a fluorine compound as a fluorinating agent with sulfur or a sulfur compound and reacting the reaction product with fluorine.
CONSTITUTION: SF6 is not manufactured directly in one step. SF4 is formed once and reacted with F2 gas. A fluorinating agent and sulfur or a sulfur compound are first reacted at -40W-150°C under ordinary pressure. As the fluorinating agent HF, NaF, KF, LiF or the like is used, and as the sulfur compound S2Cl, SCl2, S2Br2 or the like is used. The resulting SF4 and F2 gas are then reacted usually in 1:1.05W1:1.15 molar ratio at 1,300°C under almost ordinary pressure to obtain SF6. In the SF4 synthesis other sulfur compound is mixed as a byproduct, yet it can be separated by fractional distillation unitlizing a b.p. difference, solvent extraction utilizing a solubility difference or dehydration using a dehydrating agent.
