Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare the titled compound useful as a synthetic intermediate of a compound resistant to β-lactamase, easily, in one step, by reacting a specific cephem compound with methanol in the presence of an N-halogenoimide and a boric acid salt.
CONSTITUTION: A 7-methoxycephem compound of formula II is prepared by reacting a compound of formula I (R1 is lower alkyl; R2 and R3 are protecting group of carboxylic acid; W is H, halogen or lower alkyl; Z is organic or inorganic residue) with methanol in the presence of an N-halogenoimide and a boric acid salt in a solvent such as dichloromethane at 0W40°C. The compound of formula I can be prepared easily by reacting a compound of formula III with a compound of formula IV.
