Abstract
PURPOSE: Readily available or producible acrylic acid or its derivative is made to react with 2,2,2-trichloroethanol in the presence of conc. or fuming sulfuric acid in an organic solvent immiscible with the acid to produce the titled high-purity compound in high yield.
CONSTITUTION: The reaction between 2,2,2-trichloroethanol and acrylic acid of formula I or its derivative (R is H, halogen, alkyl) is effected using conc. sulfuric acid, preferably 90W100%, or fuming sulfuric acid, preferably containing 0W50% of free anhydrous sulfuric acid in an organic solvent such as petroleum ether or 1,2-dichloroethane, which is immiscible with conc. or fuming sulfuric acid to produce the objective compound of formula II such as 2,2,2-trichloroethyl methacrylate.
USE: Materials sensitive to radiation or raw material for flame-retardant polymers.
