Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide the device of simple constitution by giving a refractive index distribution to a light transmittable material of which refractive index changes with the change in potential by the potential distribution of the predetermined pattern provided in electrodes.
CONSTITUTION: An electrode plate 11 having a predetermined resistance value distribution and an electrode plate 12 of a low resistance value are provided and a light transmittable material of which refractive index changes with the change in potential, for example, a liquid crystal 13, is filled between both electrodes. An electric power source 14 and a switch 15 are connected to one end of both electrode plates 11, 12, and a resistance 16 is connected to the other end. Now when the switch 15 is turned on, electric current flows from the electrode plate 11 to the electrode plate 12 via the resistance 16, and a potential distribution owing to voltage drop is produced within the electrode surfaces according to the resistance value provided by the electrode plate 11. Hence, the field intensity applied on the liquid crystal 13 decreases gradually from one end to the other end, and the orientation of the liquid crystal 13 changes with electric fields, along with which the refractive index thereof changes.
