Abstract
PURPOSE: To manufacture p-phenylenediamine in good yield at normal temps. and normal pressures, by the electrolytic reduction of p-aminoazobenzene.
CONSTITUTION: NaOH etc. as a supporting electrolyte is put into the anodic chamber of an electrolytic cell using a diaphragm and an electrolytic soln. prepared by dissolving p-aminoazobenzene in methanol into the cathodic chamber. Pt etc. is used as the anode, and Pb etc. as the cathode. The electrolytic reduction is performed at 0°CW the b.p. of the electrolytic soln., usually at about room temp. W50°C, 0.5W 100A/dm2 current density. This method allows to manufacture p-phenylenediamine which is useful as the intermediates of dyestuffs and the raw material for polyamide fiber at high current efficiency.
