Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide an engine whose torque at idling and in the range from low- speed running to medium-speed running is almost equal to the maximum level at the medium-speed running and is inversely proportional to the revolution speed of the engine in the range from the medium-speed running through high-speed running and whose horsepower is constant in the range from the medium-speed running through high-speed running.
CONSTITUTION: A high-pressure turbosupercharger 40 and a low-pressure turbosupercharger 41 are provided in the halfway portion of an air supply pipe 34. The discharge pipes of compressors 40b, 41b are coupled in series with each other through a change-over valve 44. Turbines 40a, 41a are connected to an exhaust pipe 35 through an exhaust regulating valve 42. When the rotational frequency of an engine 1 is low, the valve element 421 of the regulating valve 42 is closed by the force of a spring 427 and only the exhaust turbine 40a is driven. When the revolution speed of the engine 1 is not lower than a medium level, the valve element 421 is opened against the force of the spring 427 to driven the turbine 41a to supply compressed air into the air supply pipe 34 by the compressor 41b.
