Abstract
PURPOSE: To make it possible to insulate heat of molten metal efficiently by covering the surface of molten metal with a heat insulating lagging material and covering the lagging material with thermally expanded foaming heat insulator, such as vermiculite, obsidian, pearlite, pitchstone, etc., which has not been foamed yet.
CONSTITUTION: The surface of molten metal is covered with a platy heat insulating lagging material, such as diatom earth, bentonite, etc. On this lagging material, a thermally expanded foaming heat insulator, such as vermiculite, obsidian, pearlite, pitchstone, etc., is put under its granular condition or after it is formed into a platy form with alumina cement, slaked lime, portland cement, etc. Therefore, when the thermally expanded foaming heat insulator reaches its foaming temperature through heat transmission from the molten metal, it foams gradually and finally forms a good heat insulating layer after the foaming heat insulator is expanded for 20W25 times in volume. This platy heat insulator may be transported by lifting when a lifting hook is fitted to the heat insulator.
