Abstract
PURPOSE:To prevent the side wall of a tank from freezing and the bottom from destroying, by covering the underground exterior of the tank with insulating material. CONSTITUTION:This low temperature underground tank has its underground exterior covered with insulating material 8. Since the insulating material 8 prevents the liquid 9 stored in the tank from absorbing thermal energy from the soil through the tank wall 1, the soil around the insulating material 8 is almost prevented from freezing. If the quality or thickness of the insulating material 8 is so selected that the energy given to the surrounding soil from its periphery is larger than that absorbed by the liquid stored, the soil surrounding the tank never freezes. This means that the cryogenic tank can function well without being thermally influenced by the surrounding underground soil.
