Abstract

1,273,990. Floating storage-chambers. HYDRO BETONG A.B. 15 May, 1969 [17 May, 1968], No. 24920/69. Heading B7A. [Also in Divisions E1 and F4] A buoyant open-ended cylindrical shell 1 may be used to store a liquid e.g. oil, 3 having a density less than that of the ambient water 2. The wall of the shell is made of concrete and rendered cellular to provide buoyancy and ballast tanks, Fig. 3 (not shown). The concrete may contain polystyrene spheres. In horizontal cross-section the shell may be circular or stream-line in shape, Fig. 4. When in transit the shell may be either towed or self-propelled. A stabilizing flange 4 may carry a perforated membrane or net 5. A further membrane 6 may separate the liquid and the water therebelow. A cover 7 may be provided. If said liquid is cryogenic e.g. a liquefied gas, a heat-insulating layer lines the shell and heat-insulating discs float above and below the liquid, Fig. 2 (not shown). Alternatively, heat insulation is effected by ice formed between the shell 1 and an inner concrete shell and either a layer of aerated oil or layers of ice and polystyrene particles floating below the liquid, Figs. 5, 6 and 7 (not shown).
