Abstract
PURPOSE:To reduce the internal resistance of a battery with a nonaqueous electrolyte and improve its discharge utilization rate, by employing a lithium-containing active material for a negative electrodes in which material lithium is held in interstices of a nonwoven glass fiber fabric. CONSTITUTION:An active material 3 for a negative electrode is formed by retaining lithium in interstices of a nonwoven glass fiber fabric 31. This active material 3 is secured under pressure to a stainless set 5 spot-welded to the inner wall of a negative electrode can 4. To prepare this active material, lithium is heated and molten for example in the negative electrode can or any other suitable vessel and in the atmosphere of an inert gas such as argon or in vacuum. Then, a nonwoven glass fiber fabric is dipped into the molten lithium to permit lithium to penetrate into the fabric, thereby filling up interstices of the fabric with lithium. It is preferable to use glass fibers of, for example, 0.2-1mum in diameter.
