Abstract

An electrode consists of an active material in the pores of a material consisting of a mixture of fibrous fragments of conducting and non-conducting materials. The conducting material has a high affinity for the active material and may consist of copper filaments when the active material is zinc. The non-conducting material may consist of glass fibres or asbestos. Fig. 1 shows an electrode comprising porous pads 15 permeated with zinc powder or zinc oxide and enclosing a current collector 12 which may be perforated. The electrode may be enclosed in a permeable envelope 16 of regenerated cellulose, polyvinyl alcohol, nylon, paper &c., which may be formed by dipping the electrode into a solution of viscose, methyl cellulose or other film-forming material.
