Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare the titled compound in high yield, by the carbonylation reaction of acetaldehyde, methyl acetate or dimethyl ether with CO in the presence of a VIII group metal as a main catalyst and a halide as a cocatalyst.
CONSTITUTION: The objective compound is prepared by reacting acetaldehyde, methyl acetate or dimethyl ether with CO under essentially anhydrous conditions (pref. a water content of ≤3mol%) in the presence of a catalyst system composed of a main catalyst comprising at least one VIII-group metal (pref. Pd, Rh or Ni) and a cocatalyst comprising a halide selected from iodides and bromides. When the amount of methyl acetate is more than stoichiometric, the conversion of acetaldehyde can be improved. The use of an organic or inorganic accelerator makes the reaction more profitable. The accelerator is pref. an organic accelerator (a compound containing trivalent N or P) capable of forming a cordination compound with the metal catalyst.
