Abstract

PURPOSE: To increase the selectivity of the titled compound, by the presence of an adequate amount of water in the reaction system in reacting methanol with CO and H2 in the presence of a catalyst containing Ru, Co and I.
CONSTITUTION: Methanol is reacted with carbon monoxide and hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst containing Ru, Co and I as active constituents at 150W 200°C and the total partial pressure of the carbon manoxide and hydrogen of 100W300kg/cm2 to give ethanol. In the process, the amount of water present in the reaction system (including the water formed by the reaction and water accompanied by the raw material methanol) is kept in the range of 0.2W2mol based on one mole methanol. The presence of acetic acid or methyl acetate previously in the reaction system inhibits the formation of the acetic acid and methyl acetate as by-products, and the selectivity for ethanol is further improved.
EFFECT: Low grade methanol containing water is usable.
