Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain acetic anhydride advantageously in reacting methyl acetate, etc. with carbon monoxide in the presence of nickel, a halide and an organic nitrogen family compound, by using metals of Groups IVB andIA or/and IIA as a co-catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: Methyl acetate or dimethyl ether is reacted with carbon monoxide in the presence of a catalyst consisting of (A) nickel or a nickel compound component, (B) a halide, e.g. bromide or iodide, particularly a methyl halide, and (C) an organic nitrogen family compound, preferably a heterocyclic ring compound, e.g. pyridine, and (D) a metal or group IVB, preferably Sn, or/and a compound thereof, and (E) a metal of groupIA, a preferably Li, metal of group II, preferably Ca or Sr, or/and a compound thereof as a co-catalyst to give the aimed acetic anhydride at a high activity of the inexpensive catalyst under mild conditions industrially and advantageously at a high reaction rate.
