Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled substance useful as an intermediate for a drug in high reactivity and in high yield without problems of the corrosion of device, etc., by reducing 4-hydroxymandelic acids with hydrogen in water in the presence of a palladium catalyst and a cocatalyst of zinc acetate.
CONSTITUTION: A compound shown by the formula I (X is H or halogen) is reduced with hydrogen in water in the presence of a palladium catalyst and a cocatalyst of zinc acetate, to give a compound shown by the formula II (especially X is H or Cl). A palladium catalyst wherein 0.5W8wt% metal palladium is supported on a carrier. e.g., active carbon, graphite, etc. is suitable as the palladium catalyst, and its amount is 0.01W0.5g calculated as metal palladium based on 1mol compound shown by the formula I. The cocatalyst of zinc acetate may be supported on the carrier together with the palladium catalyst, and its amount is 0.02W0.1mol based on 1mol compound shown by the formula I. The addition of a small amount of an acid, e.g., hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, etc. to the reaction system improves the reaction rate.
