Abstract

PURPOSE:To reduce the flickering of the illumination of a fluorescent lamp at low temperatures as well as the power loss of a ballast, and enhance the efficiency of the fluorescent lamp by providing the outer surface of a glass tube with a magnetic- field generator, which is located so that the magnetic field generated by the magnetic poles of the generator crosses the electric-discharge route of the lamp. CONSTITUTION:A straight glass tube 2 is charged with a mixture of rare gases whose main component is krypton. A permanent magnet 8 as a magnetic-field generator is attached to the top of the outer surface of the glass tube 2 along the length of the tube 2 by an appropriate means such as using an adhesive or the like. The magnetic poles of the permanent magnet 8 is located so that the direction of the magnetic field crosses the electric-discharge route of a fluorescent lamp. Consequently, the magnetic field moves mercury ions having small mobilities toward the wall of the tube, the recombinations of the mercury ions with discharged electrons are accelerated, and the flickering of the lamp is suppressed in a short period of time. In addition, the impression of the magnetic field activates the recombinations of mercury ions and causes the temperatures of electrons to rise, which increase the luminous flux at low temperatures through the increase of the temperature within the tube.
