Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain an electrophotographic receptor high in dark resistivity, and thermal, chemical, and mechanical strength, by decomposing a gas containing silane and carbon by glow discharge, and forming a photoconductive layer made of an amorphous material.
CONSTITUTION: A specified gas, e.g., a gas mixture of SiH4 and CH4 is introduced into a vacuum chamber, and electric discharge is caused. Silane or its derivative and a gas containing carbon are reacted by glow discharge decomposition for decomposing the introduced gas with this discharge energy, resulting in forming on a conductive substrate a photoconductive layer made of an amorphous material consisting chiefly of carbon and silicon. This photoconductive layer is controlled in composition of carbon and silicon and in addition amount of hydrogen, or hydrogen and fluorine so as to satisfy the value of dark resistivity required for the photoconductive layer of an electrophotographic receptor.
