Abstract

PURPOSE: To manufacture a graphite composite material easy to mold and having compression restorability and superior mechanical strength by mixing a small amount of a thermosetting powdered org. binder into expanded graphite and then press molding and heat setting.
CONSTITUTION: 96.5W99.0wt% Expanded graphite obtd. by expanding starting material graphite ≥20 times in bulk density ratio is mixed with a 1.0W3.5wt% thermosetting powdered org. binder such as phenol resin. The grain size of the org. binder is desirably ≤200 meash. This mixed composite material is molded at ordinary or elevated temp. by compression molding or other method and optionally heated at a temp. above the melting or setting temp. of the org. binder to obtain a graphite composite material having considerably improved compression rupture strength after oil dipping as compared to a conventional expanded graphite molded body.
