Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain a fixed attenuator free from the return of reflected light by providing optical attenuating characteristics controlled to predetermined values to a focusing rod lens made of silicic acid glass contg. metal ion. CONSTITUTION:Focusing rod lens 10 is obtd. by mixing 0.01-0.1wt% Cu<2+>, Cr<3+>, Fe<2+> or other metal ion into silicic acid glass consisting essentially of SiO2, B2O3, Na2O and Tl2O3. A pair of optical fibers 11, 12 are coupled to the light beam incident and emergent parts of lens 10, respectively while allowing their optical axes to agree with each other. The metal ion mixed into the silicic acid glass as impurity causes light absorption due to material absorption in lens 10, resulting in high quality lens 10 with very high purity and no optical attenuating characteristics. Thus, an attenuator free from the return of reflected light can be obtd.
