Abstract

PURPOSE:To reduce the transmission loss of an optical fiber by adding Ge oxide and Al oxide to glass for a core when an optical fiber is manufacured by a rod-in- tube method using the glass and glass for a clad. CONSTITUTION:When an optical fiber is manufactured by a rod-in-tube method, glass having a composition consisting of 0-65% SiO2, 10-80% GeO2, 5-15% B2O3, 0.5-20% R2O, 10-30% Al2O3 and 0-20% RO is used as glass for a core, and glass having composition consisting of 60-90% SiO2, 5-15% B2O3, 0.5-20% R2O, 0.5-5% Al2O3 and 0-10% RO is used as glass for a clad. By adding GeO2 which is easily obtd. at high purity and vitrified in a wide range and Al2 O3 for enhancing the water resistance, the water resistance of the core material is enhanced, resulting in reduced transmission loss.
