Abstract

PURPOSE:To provide good chamical resistance properties and superior weatherability and achieve the improvement in performance, service life and scattering loss by using the multicomponent base glasses comprising specifying core material and covering material to respectively specified component values of specific materials. CONSTITUTION:The glass fiber is formed by drawing the multicomponent base glass composed of SiO2 40 to 80%, Al2O3 0.5 to 7%, alkali metal oxide 10 to 23%, CaO 2 to 12%, MgO 0 to 5%, B2O3 0 to 15% and ZrO2 1 to 12% based on weight, as a core material, and the multicomponent base glass composed of SiO2 65 to 80%, Al2O3 0.5 to 10%, alkali metal oxide 9 to 17%, CaO 1 to 5%, MgO 0 to 4% and B2O3 0 to 10%, based on weight, as a covering material, at temperatures of, e.g., 800 to 1100 deg.C, by a double crucible method. These made chemical resistances such as water resistance, acid resistance and alkali resistance good, make weatherability superior owing to less alkali elution from the covering layer and make it possible to considerably improve performance, service life and scattering loss.
