Abstract
PURPOSE: To improve the yield by grasping accurately the length of remaining cast billet when specification of actual surface of molten metal is possible, and recognizing accurately the cold shut or the end of final cast billet eliminating the cumulative measuring error produced until this point of time.
CONSTITUTION: The distance of separation l between a cutter 6 installed in the outlet side of a continuous casting machine and the front end of a cast billet 7 which is in the downstream side of the cutter 6, and the distance of separation L between the cutter 6 and actual surface of molten metal in a mold 3 are measured at a point of time when specification of actual surface of molten metal is possible. Then, the sum L+l of these distances of separation is corrected and recognized as the length of remaining cast billet at this point of time. In the case where this correction is made after completion of, for instance, a tundish 2, the cumulative measuring error until that time can be eliminated by measuring the length of remaining cast billet by regarding the time of correction as the starting point in the continuous casting process by the next tundish 2.
