Abstract

PURPOSE: To rapidly decide the degree of graphite vermiculation by thermoanalytically measuring the relations between the temperatures and time of cooling and solidifying process and obtaining said degree by substituting the three parameters having a close correlation with the graphite vermiculation degree of cast iron into the equation obtd. from experimental examples.
CONSTITUTION: The equation I which gives a degree of vermiculation DV is decided by the lowest temp. TEU due to the supercooling caused by the solidification of eutectic during the cooling and solidifying stage under a prescribed condition with respect to a molten sample of vermicular graphite cast iron, the lowest temp. TPU due to the supercooling caused by the eutectoid transformation during the progress of cooling and solidification, the highest temp. TPM at the recalescence which occurs subsequently and constants (a), (b) and (c), wherein (a), (b) and (c) are decided by one among the rate of graphite spheroidization, the amt. of residual Mg, the ratio of residual Mg to Ti, tensile strength, and elongation. Here, the numerical values of TEU, TPU, TPM under the above-described predetermined cooling conditions of an unknown sample are substituted into the relational expression, whereby the characteristic value DV for decision of the degree of graphite vermiculation is obtained.
