Abstract

PURPOSE:To enable connection while controlling the spreading of light in the horizontal direction by employing a square distribution of refractive index in the width direction and using optical systems of continued film thicknesses in the thickness direction. CONSTITUTION:A thin film optical transmission line 2 formed with a grating 1 on the surface is placed on a substrate 3, and this and optical fibers 4, 5, 6, are connected respectively by film thickness converters 7, 8, 9. The film thickness converters 7, 8, 9 are capable of converting spot light sources to parallel rays. Light 10 propagating in the optical fiber 4 is reduced down to several mum in the thickness direction by the film thickness converter 7 and in the horizontal direction it is converted to parallel rays of a width several mm..
