Abstract
PURPOSE:To form easily and surely an optical fiber base material having a refractive index provile of almost square distribution type by removing an acutely rising higher refractive index central part of a transparent glass rod obtd. by a vapor phase axial sticking method. CONSTITUTION:A porous glass preform manufactured by a vapor phase axial sticking method is heated to form transparent glass rod 1. Rod 1 is put into carbon jig 3a with hole 2 bored, and while keeping jig 3a at about 1,500-1,600 deg.C a central part of rod 1 is pressed with plunger 4 to remove central part A by punching. Hollow pipe 1b thus obtd. is washed by hydrofluoric acid washing or other means, and it is made solid by collapsing to form solid rod 1c. Rod 1c is then drawn, melt- stuck to a quartz pipe jacket by heating, and spun into an optical fiber.
