Abstract
PURPOSE:To prevent abnormal refractive index in a simple manner by using an etching agent to remove, in collapse process, internal surface layer which becomes the core of optical fiber. CONSTITUTION:The following treatment is performed in production of internally- filled optical fiber base material through collapse process of silica-based glass tube containing dopant and having internal layer which becomes the core of optical fiber. High temperature at collapse process causes such internal surface layer to change in refractive index, and therefore a process is includes such that the internal layer is removed by etching agent. The etching-remove process is performed in the middle of collapsing, if it is conducted once, or for multiple-collapse process, during at least one of any such process. (Preferably, during the last process.) For 4-step collapse process, it is preferable to perform at least one etching process during three continuous collapse operations.
