Abstract

PURPOSE:To provide preform not having abnormal refractive index point by a method wherein a block is subjected to phase-separation heat treatment and acid elution to form a porous glass block, and small blocks are cut out from a part other than the center section of the block and subjected to dopant treatment after polishing. CONSTITUTION:To produce preform as base material for rod glass used in optical communication, phase-separable glass such as Na2O-K2O-B2O3-SiO2 is cut out, heat-treated, leached in 3N HCl at 100 deg.C so that a soft phase is eluted from the surface of block 21 to produce a porous glass block 21. Because the center area of the block 21 gives an abnormal refractive index point, the block is cut along a line 22 passing the center, further cut into a small square rod 23 which is separated as 23' and is sequentially polished as shown from 24-26 to form a round rod 26. The rod 26 is washed with aqueous 3N HNO3 solution and with water to provide a porous glass rod. Then, the rod is immersed in aqueous CsNO3 at 105 deg.C, maintained at 20 deg.C for several hours, washed with water, then washed with ethyl alcohol, to remove dissolved CsNO3, soaked with C3H7OH, and heated, while being slowly dried, up to 850 deg.C so that optical glass having proper refractive index distribution is provided.
