Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the title glass as an optical transmission fiber base material of high strength by depositing simultaneously or separately a cpd. acting as a viscosity adjusting dopant and a refractive index adjusting stuffing agent in the micropores of a porous glass body.
CONSTITUTION: An SiO2 porous glass body contg. several % of B2O3 is stuffed with a refractive index adjusting stuffing agent such as a hot aq. soln. of CsNO3 or the like and treated with a pure aq. soln. or the like of around room temp. to deposit the agent in the micropores. The stuffed body is then unstuffed to a predetermined concn. distribution with water, alcohol or the like contg. a cpd. such as H3BO4 of this invention or a P-contg. cpd. which is sol. in water, etc. and acts as a dopant lowering the glass viscosity and slightly changing the refractive index. The unstuffed body is dipped in C2H5OH or the like having low solubility to the abovementioned stuffing agents to coprecipitate the agents and treated by a known method to soften clad glass, thus obtaining a high strength fiber base material. The stuffing agents can be deposited separately.
