Abstract
PURPOSE:To prepare a light transmitting fiber with a predetermined refraction index distribution by a method wherein a predetermined refraction index distribution is formed to a longitudinal direction of a band like membrane comprising a transparent substance, then said membrane is wound in cylindrical form and molten, spun to obtain titled fiber. CONSTITUTION:A glass membrane 10 wound on a roller 11 is passed through molten TaNO3 within a liquid tank 12 and, thereafter, wound on a roller 14. A membrane 10 of a necessary length is subjected to immersion treatment and, thereafter, a liquid tank 12 is lowered downwardly to be retracted and an immersed membrane portion 10b is washed by water and dried. Subsequently, this membrane 10 is wound in such a way that a high refranction index portion 10b is faced to an inner side and wound on a core 16 to form a cylinder. When this winding core 16 is removed, is formed a preform 17 of which an inner layer has refraction index higher than an outer layer as well as each layer has uniform refraction index in an inner portion thereof. Thereby, if this preform 17 is spun, an optical fiber of a stepwise refraction index distribution type is obtained.
