Abstract

PURPOSE:To produce an optical fiber having a core of a desired sectional shape easily with high accuracy by inserting a core material of a dissimilar cross sectional shape into a glass pipe of refractive index lower than that of the core material, melt-sticking the glass to the entire circumference of the core material and elongating the same. CONSTITUTION:A clad glass layer 2 of refractive index lower than that of a glass pipe 1 of, for example, pure quartz, is formed on the inside circumferential surface of the glass pipe 1, and a core material 3 of a desired dissimilar cross sectional shape is inserted therein. The core material 3 consists of, for example, pure quartz or doped quartz or the like, and is higher in refractive index than the clad glass layer 2. The assembly disposed in this way is heated to 800-1,500 deg.C to sticking the core material 3 and the clad glass layer 2, thereby providing base material for optical fiber 5. This base material 5 is heated and elongated, whereby the optical fiber having a dissimilar shaped core material 3 of, for example, 150mu outside diameter elongated to a shape resembling to that of the base material 5 is obtained.
