Abstract

PURPOSE:To mass-produce extra-micro rollers of the same diameter by bundling the glass cores which are hard to dissolve with acids and have been coated with the glass layers which are soluble with acids, and have a low softening point and viscosity temperature and approximate coefficients of expansion, stretching the same under heating and acid-eluting the coating layers. CONSTITUTION:Glass cores 1 of about 10mm. diameter which are rollers used for spacers for manufacturing liquid crystal cell cases and are hard to dissolve with acids are put in glass cylinders of about 14mm. outside diameter and about 11mm. inside diameter which are lower in softening point and viscosity than said cores, have approxiamate coefficients of expansion and are soluble with acids. Further, a multiplicity of these are put concentrically into a glass cylinder 4 of the same quality as that of the glass cylinders 2. This is then heated to about 780 deg.C and is thus melt stuck. This is next put into a glass cylinder 5 of the same quality as that of the multiple glass cylinders 2 and while the inside of the glass cylinder 5 is being maintained in a vacuum, it is passed through a furnace 8 maintained at about 800 deg.C by an annular heating element 7 and is stretched to about 2mm. diameter by rollers 10. After this is disintegrated on a pad, the broken pieces are immersed for about 1hr in about 1.5N nitric acid soln. to elute the acid-soluble glass base, whereby the desired rollers of a length about 3 times the diameter are obtained.
