Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide crystalline vanadium-phosphorus oxide having a specified X- ray diffraction pattern and useful as the precursor of a catalyst used in the manufacture of maleic anhydride from hydrocarbon.
CONSTITUTION: This crystalline vanadium-phosphorus oxide has the X-ray diffraction pattern shown by the diagram (where (vs) is very strong, (s) is strong, (m) is medium and (w) is weak). This oxide is manufactured as follows: a vanadium compound such as vanadium pentaoxide and a phosphorus compound such as orthophosphoric acid are mixed into water at ≤ about 50wt% concn. each, and after adding a reducing agent, preferably oxalic acid or hydrochloric acid having weak reducing power, the mixture is allowed to react under mild reducing conditions. The resulting precipitate is separated by filtration and dried. This crystalline oxide is formed into the desired shape and calcined at about 350W650°C to obtain the above- mentioned catalyst.
