Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce title conditioner contg. quick-acting and slow-acting fertilizer components which are essential to the growth of crops, by neutralizing a slurry obtained by decomposing ferronickel slag with phosphoric acid and/or sulfuric acid by the addition of a basic magnesium salt, granulating and drying the mixture.
CONSTITUTION: Ferronickel slag produced as a by-product in the preparation of ferronickel by smelting garnierite in an electric furnace, is pulverized, and after addition of phosphoric acid or a mixed acid of phosphoric acid and sulfuric acid, reacted with the acids by heating. Phosphoric acid is used preferably in an amount corresponding to a molar ratio to the total MgO in the slag, of 0.7W2.8, and in case where a mixed acid of phosphoric acid and sulfuric acid is used, these acids are used in amounts which provide a mol ratio of the acids to the total MgO, of 0.7W3.8. The resulting slurry is neutralized by the addition of basic magnesium salt, granulated and dried. Thereby, magnesium silicate, which is a main component of the ferronickel slag, is converted into magnesium phosphate which is useful as a fertilizer.
