Abstract

PURPOSE: To manufacture fine chromium oxide having low crystallinity and suitable for use as a ceramic material by adding a mineral acid and an N-contg. compound to an alkali (di)chromate followed by thermal decomposition under the specified condition and washing said material.
CONSTITUTION: To an alkali (di)chromate are added a mineral acid such as sulfuric acid or hydrochloric acid by ≥0.1mol/mol of chromate as CrO3 and an N- contg. compound such as (NH4)2CO3 or alkylurea, and they are mixed. This mixture is thermally decomposed at a relatively low temp. (≤400°C) above the decomposition temp.,freed of foreign salts by washing, dried, and pulverized to obtain chromium oxide having ≤0.2° of crystallinity and 4W300m2/g specific surface area.
